BANANA BOAT
SCHOOL EXERCISE • 2021
"Banana Boat" is a 2nd year exercise. The theme of this exercise was “amusement park”. The choice was free, so I decided to make an original attraction using the concept of pirate ships that swing from right to left in amusement parks.
During this exercise, I modeled the attraction as well as the Ferris wheel in the background. For the rest, I used an HDRI and the focal length of my camera in order to emphasize the subject of this exercise; namely, my Banana Boat. I really enjoyed doing this exercise. Although there are a lot of flaws, especially in terms of lighting and surfacing, I am quite happy with my idea and to have managed to put it in place more or less as I wanted.
ALL ASPECTS
CONCEPT ART & RESEARCHES
• To improve my modeling skills
• To get closer to what I had in my head
• To make an approximately correct image composition
• Lighting ► My lighting is really very basic. At that time I was still struggling to understand how to do good lighting. Even if I like the atmosphere of this image, it is clear that the HDRI that I used is not of very good quality. Also, few things are not legible, notably the name of the attraction, because of the glow effect that I accentuated a little too much during compositing. In the future, I will ensure that my lighting is coherent and, above all, constructed
• Surfacing ► My surfacing is really not very sought after. I just added very basic textures, something I no longer do with my current level. My goal in the future is to always work on my textures in detail, in order to have a credible result
• Environment ► Apart from the Ferris wheel, I put practically no environment in this exercise. This is a mistake I won't make again in the future because everything looks very empty in my image
• Image composition ► Even if I like my staging and the fact of having a pyramidal composition, there is a lot of compositional fragility in this exercise. In particular, many elements are unreadable. In the future, I will make sure to highlight my main subject more with my camera, my framing, my knowledge of image composition as well as my lighting
• Compositing ► My compositing is extremely rudimentary. I wasn't able to improve my image, highlight it as I wanted. In the future, I will ensure that compositing can only improve my projects and not undermine them, in particular by avoiding putting glow everywhere and by playing with the exposure of my elements, saturation and contrast
