FUTURISTIC ROAD
SCHOOL EXERCISE • 2021

"Futuristic Road" is a third-year school project. The theme of this exercise was "the road". I decided to create a futuristic road, letting my imagination run wild.
Even though I enjoyed working on this exercise, I must admit the result isn't entirely successful. I discovered many new techniques while creating my road, especially in environmental design, which I hadn't really had a chance to practice before. However, despite the good intentions behind this exercise, I lack references. There is almost no intent in the image composition, the rendering is noisy, and there are errors with the displacement, among other issues.
Nevertheless, I’m still very happy with this exercise because it taught me a lot.
ALL ASPECTS

CONCEPT ART
• To create a complex 3D environment in very little time
• To discover new modeling and texturing techniques, particularly with neon lights and the background buildings in the image
• Surfacing ► My surfacing is very basic. There are many errors, especially in the displacement. In the future, I’ll ensure my textures are high-quality, paying attention to my displacement and tessellation to avoid visually jarring and unattractive deformations.
• Lighting and Compositing ► My lighting is clearly not exceptional. It’s all over the place; there’s no night sky, and many elements are missing, while others are superfluous. Similarly, my compositing does not do justice to my image. Moving forward, I will work on my lighting and compositing with greater precision to give my image a coherent, readable, and aesthetic appearance.
• References ► This project shows a clear lack of references. I dove in blindly, and it shows. Even though I enjoyed it, I don’t plan to approach projects this way in the future, as it makes the image lack cohesion.
• Image Composition ► There’s some intent in the composition of my image—certain focal lines, like the train line and the triangle formed by the three lights, are interesting. But that’s about it; a clear, defined composition is missing. What story did I want to tell? What did I want to highlight? These are questions I’ll ask myself for every project in the future, to think through and clarify my intentions in image composition and avoid repeating the same mistakes.
