VENUS AWAKEN
SOLO MOVIE • 2021

“Venus Awaken” is an exercise made at the end of the 2nd year. The goal of this exercise was to make a 10-second loop of animation. I had the idea of taking inspiration from the painting "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli already because I find it really magnificent but also for reasons of practicality. Indeed, it was easier to make a loop of a shell that opens and closes rather than a complete character.
I really enjoyed this exercise, which was my first short film made entirely on my own. I was able to have fun trying things, especially with the Vray Toon. Of course, the result is not perfect but at least I would have learned to use this tool. On the other hand, I had a lot of trouble animating my Venus, especially her hair. But I'm quite happy with the end result.

ALL ASPECTS

REFERENCE

CONCEPT ART

• To make a short film in total autonomy
• To do a complete rigging
• To try new visual approaches and techniques
• To make a complete loop animation
• Lighting ► I honestly didn't break my head during this exercise, I had difficulty understanding how to operate my lighting with the Vray Toon. Now that I am specialized in lighting and very comfortable at lighting a scene with a toon shader, I know that I would not have done this at all
• Sculpting ► Even if I find my sculpt successful, there are a few quacks, particularly in terms of proportions. In the future, I plan to work with more references to make my sculpt as clean as possible.
• Surfacing ► Although this exercise is carried out entirely with the Vray Toon, I think that I could have largely detailed my surfacing in more details and not just kept it so simple
• Animation ► It was the first time that I animated something organic, so I didn't have "logical" reflexes when it came to animation. Even if I didn't specialize in it, I still like animation and in the future, when I have to do it again for personal or professional projects, I will try to improve it, to work with more of references and to animate in a simpler and more logical way
• Rigging ► I think my rig is pretty decent, however I'm still having trouble with the skin. This is a skill that I plan to develop further for my future work
